When Hydro Jetting Is the Right Fix, and When Cabling Is

Hydro jetting clears a drain by scouring the full inside diameter of the pipe with water at high pressure, so it is the right choice when a line keeps re-clogging rather than blocking once. A cable, or snake, punches through a blockage and restores flow quickly, which is exactly what you want for a single hair clog in a bathroom branch or a one-off obstruction. It does not remove the layer of hardened grease and sludge coating the pipe wall, so the same line closes up again. Jetting strips that layer back to bare pipe and flushes the debris downstream, which is why a jetted line normally stays open far longer than a cabled one.

Two failure modes, two neighbourhoods

Grease Plates, Roots Invade

The two jobs we jet most in Ottawa fail in different ways. Grease cools fast in an unheated basement or a cold crawl space, so it plates onto the pipe wall a millimetre at a time until a four-inch waste line is running through a channel half that size. That pattern turns up in restaurant kitchens with a long horizontal run to the stack, and in converted walk-ups around Centretown and Hintonburg where the kitchen drain travels a long way before it drops. Root intrusion is a joint problem instead: fine roots find the seams of a vitrified clay or cast iron lateral and fan out inside the pipe, catching paper and solids. That is a Glebe, Sandy Hill, New Edinburgh and Old Ottawa South problem, wherever mature street trees sit over an original lateral.

Lines We Jet Most Often

The three situations where high-pressure jetting outperforms a cable.

Restaurant Waste Lines

Kitchen runs that pack with congealed grease between cleanings and back up during service.

Home Kitchen & Laundry Stacks

Older cast iron stacks narrowed by grease, soap scum and detergent sludge.

Root-Filled Laterals

Clay and cast iron sewer laterals under mature trees, where roots enter at the joints.

What Hydro Jetting Costs in Ottawa

Hydro jetting in Ottawa generally runs between about $300 and $1,500. A short, accessible residential kitchen line with a clean cleanout sits at the low end. Cost climbs with the length of the run, the pipe diameter, whether we have to pull a toilet or open a wall to get a jetting head in, how many passes the buildup needs, and whether root cutting is involved. Commercial kitchens on a scheduled maintenance interval are usually quoted differently from a one-time emergency clear, and we put the number in writing before the hose comes off the truck. If you are not sure which service you need yet, the quickest route is to describe the symptom to us through the rest of our full range of Ottawa plumbing services and let the camera decide.

What to Expect on the Day

Jetting is a wetter and noisier job than cabling, so it helps to know what it needs.

Access to a cleanout

We need a cleanout to work from, or somewhere on the line we can create one.

A water source on site

The machine is fed from the property's own water supply while it runs.

Debris contained at the access point

What comes off the pipe wall has to go somewhere, so we contain and collect it at the access point rather than letting it wash across a basement floor.

Time on site

A straightforward residential line is usually a couple of hours including the camera work at both ends. A long commercial run with heavy grease can take most of a shift, which is why restaurant jetting is scheduled outside service hours rather than squeezed into a lunch break.

What a Jetting Visit Includes

We do not jet blind. The camera runs first, and again at the end.

Camera First

We locate the blockage and confirm the pipe is sound enough to jet safely.

Matched Nozzle & Pressure

Head and pressure are chosen for the pipe material, diameter and type of buildup.

Camera After

A second pass on video shows you bare pipe wall instead of a promise that it is clear.

When Jetting Is the Wrong Call

Jetting is not the answer to every blocked line, and the camera is what tells us so. High-pressure water in a pipe that has already failed structurally can make things worse: a cracked cast iron section, an offset joint where one length has dropped away from the next, a partial collapse, or a badly corroded lateral needs repair or lining, not cleaning. Roots are a middle case. Cutting them back with a rotating jetting head restores full flow, but the entry point at the joint is still there and the roots will return, so jetting a root line is maintenance on a repeating schedule unless the lateral is relined or replaced. We will tell you which of those you are looking at, with the video to back it up, rather than selling repeat visits on a pipe that needs a permanent fix.

Keeping a Jetted Line Clear Afterwards

Mostly a question of what goes into the pipe once it is clean.

In a Home Kitchen

Scrape cookware into the compost or the garbage instead of rinsing grease down the sink, and put a basket strainer in the drain.

Chemical Cleaners

Treat chemical drain cleaner as something that damages older cast iron rather than something that maintains it.

In a Commercial Kitchen

The grease interceptor is the control point. Undersized, overdue for pumping or bypassed, and the waste line downstream keeps loading up no matter how well it was jetted. That is a separate service from jetting and the two work together, so we flag it when the camera shows grease returning faster than the schedule should allow.

Why Use Plumbing Services Ottawa for Jetting

High-pressure work on someone else's drain line deserves a careful operator.

Camera-first diagnosis

We confirm the pipe can take the pressure before we jet it, and show you the line on video afterward.

Commercial and residential

Restaurant kitchen lines on a maintenance interval and one-time residential clears, both quoted in writing.

Honest about the limits

If the video shows a structural failure, we say so and quote the repair instead of jetting a pipe that cannot be saved by cleaning.

24/7 emergency dispatch

A restaurant line that backs up mid-service is not a next-week problem, and we do not treat it as one.

Hydro Jetting FAQs

How much does hydro jetting cost in Ottawa?

Most jobs land between about $300 and $1,500. A short residential kitchen line with an accessible cleanout is at the bottom of that range. Long commercial runs, larger diameter pipe, difficult access, multiple passes and root cutting all push it up. You get the number in writing before we start, not after.

Is hydro jetting better than snaking a drain?

For a single localized clog, a cable is faster and cheaper and there is no reason to jet. For a line that clogs again every few weeks, jetting is the better value, because a cable leaves the grease and sludge layer on the pipe wall while jetting removes it. The repeat clog is the signal.

Can hydro jetting damage my pipes?

Not in a sound pipe at the correct pressure. It can worsen a pipe that has already failed, which is why we camera the line first. If we see cracks, an offset joint, heavy corrosion or a partial collapse, we stop and quote a repair or a lining instead of jetting it.

Does jetting get rid of tree roots permanently?

No. A rotating cutting head clears the root mass back to the pipe wall and full flow returns, but the crack or open joint the roots came in through is still there, so they grow back. Jetting keeps a root-affected lateral working on a repeat schedule. Lining or replacing the pipe is what ends it.

How often should a restaurant jet its kitchen line?

It depends on volume, menu and how long the horizontal run is before it reaches the stack. A high-volume kitchen with a long cold run needs it far more often than a small cafe. The practical approach is to jet once, note how the camera looks at the next backup, and set the interval from what actually happens on that line.

Do I need a camera inspection before jetting?

We include it. It tells us where the blockage is, what it is made of, what the pipe is made of, and whether the pipe is structurally able to take high-pressure water. Skipping it means guessing at the nozzle, the pressure and the cause, and it removes any proof that the line is genuinely clear afterward.
