Repairing a Sewer Lateral Without Digging Up the Yard

Cured-in-place pipe lining rebuilds a failing sewer lateral from the inside, so the old pipe stays in the ground and the yard above it stays intact. A resin-saturated liner is pulled or inverted into the existing lateral through a cleanout or a single small access pit, inflated against the pipe wall, and cured into a hard, jointless pipe within the old one. Because the new pipe has no joints, the route that roots used to enter is gone, and the interior is smooth rather than scaled or root-scarred. The practical appeal in Ottawa is what does not happen: no trench across the front lawn, no cut through a paved driveway or interlock walkway, and no root ball removed from under a mature tree.

Where it matters most

Under the Driveway, Under the Maple

The properties where this matters most are the ones where the lateral runs under something expensive or irreplaceable. In the pre-war core, in the Glebe, Old Ottawa South, New Edinburgh, Sandy Hill and Hintonburg, the original vitrified clay or cast iron lateral typically runs from the front of the house, under a narrow front yard planted with a street tree, out to the City main. Open-cut replacement there means removing sidewalk, lawn and often the tree’s structural roots, and the tree rarely survives that in good shape. On the newer side of the city the driveway is the obstacle: a stamped concrete or interlock drive over the lateral turns a straightforward dig into a landscaping bill much larger than the plumbing. Lining sidesteps both. Remember that the City maintains the main up to the property line, while the lateral from the property line into the house is the owner’s, and it is typically excluded from standard home insurance.

What Lining Fixes Well

The failure modes where a cured-in-place liner is genuinely the right repair.

Root Intrusion at Joints

A jointless liner removes the seams roots grow through, so cutting them back stops being an annual chore.

Cracks & Corroded Cast Iron

Longitudinal cracking and interior corrosion in an otherwise round, continuous pipe.

Leaking Joints & Infiltration

Groundwater entering through open joints, which loads the line and undermines the soil around it.

What Lining Costs Against an Open-Cut Dig

Trenchless lining in Ottawa generally falls between about $3,000 and $8,000. The variables are the length of the lateral, its diameter, how many bends it takes, whether a usable cleanout already exists or an access pit has to be dug, how much cleaning and root cutting the pipe needs before the liner goes in, and whether the line has to be reinstated at a branch connection afterward. That range is usually competitive with open-cut replacement on its own, and it becomes clearly cheaper once restoration is priced in, because a trench that crosses a driveway, an interlock walkway or a mature garden bed carries a rebuild cost that has nothing to do with plumbing. You can see how this fits alongside the rest of what we do on our main Ottawa plumbing page.

The Order the Work Follows

A lining job is sequential, and skipping the first step is what makes a liner fail.

Clean the host pipe

Jetting and root cutting come first, because a liner pressed against a wall of grease and root hair will not bond properly to the pipe.

Re-camera and measure

The line is inspected again and measured so the liner is cut to the right length.

Insert, inflate, cure

The resin-saturated liner goes in through the cleanout or the access pit, is inflated against the pipe wall, and is left to cure into a jointless pipe.

Reinstate the branches

Any branch connection the liner covered, such as a floor drain tie-in, is reinstated afterwards.

Hand the line back

The line is out of service while it cures, so we tell you that window in advance and you plan the day around it rather than discovering it at eleven in the morning.

When Lining Is the Wrong Answer

A liner needs a host pipe. These conditions call for excavation instead.

Collapsed Sections

If the pipe has caved in, there is nothing to line against and the section has to be dug and replaced.

Bellies & Low Spots

A liner follows the existing grade. A sag that holds standing water stays a sag after lining.

Missing Pipe Wall

Cast iron corroded through to open soil along the bottom cannot support a liner and needs replacement.

Why the Camera Comes Before the Quote

That is why every lining quote starts with a camera inspection, not a phone estimate. The video tells us the pipe material, the diameter, the depth and route, where the joints and bends are, and critically whether the host pipe is continuous enough to line. It also finds the conditions that rule lining out. A belly is the one homeowners are most often surprised by: the line drains slowly and backs up repeatedly, and it is tempting to assume the pipe is dirty, but a low spot caused by settled soil holds water regardless of how clean the pipe is, and only re-grading a dug section fixes it. Sometimes the answer is a hybrid, with a short excavated repair at the failed length and a liner through the rest, which keeps the trench small and the driveway intact. We show you the footage and quote the options side by side rather than pushing one method.

After the Liner Cures

A lined lateral behaves like a new pipe, which means it still has to be treated like one.

It Is Still a Drain

The jointless interior removes the root entry points and carries solids better than scaled cast iron did, but wipes, cooking grease and sanitary products will block a lined pipe exactly as readily as they blocked the old one.

Keep the Valve Reachable

If the property has a backwater valve, it must remain accessible inside the dwelling for maintenance, and lining work should not bury it.

Ask About Flood Protection

If there is no flood protection at all and the basement has taken water before, an excavation-free lining job is a sensible moment to ask whether a valve belongs in the plan too.

Why Plumbing Services Ottawa for Trenchless Work

Lining is the right call often, but not always, and we will tell you which it is.

Camera-first diagnosis

We assess the host pipe on video before quoting, and you see the same footage we do.

We say when it will not work

Collapses, bellies and missing pipe wall get quoted as excavation, not sold as a liner that will disappoint you.

Permit-compliant work

Where the scope requires a City permit and inspection, that is part of the job, not an extra you arrange yourself.

Trenchless Sewer Lining FAQs

How much does trenchless sewer lining cost in Ottawa?

Most residential jobs run between about $3,000 and $8,000. Length, diameter, the number of bends, whether an access pit is needed, and how much cleaning the host pipe requires all move the number. The comparison worth making is not liner against dig alone, but liner against dig plus rebuilding whatever the trench crosses.

Will lining save my driveway and my trees?

That is the main reason to choose it. Lining works through an existing cleanout or one small access pit, so a paved or interlock driveway does not get cut and a mature tree does not lose the structural roots an open trench would sever. On narrow pre-war lots where the lateral runs under a street tree, that difference is significant.

When can a sewer line not be lined?

When there is no sound host pipe to line against. A collapsed section, a length of cast iron corroded through to open soil, or a severe offset where one pipe has dropped away from the next all need excavation. A belly, meaning a sag that holds standing water, also cannot be fixed by lining, because the liner follows the existing grade.

How long does the work take and can I use water during it?

Most residential laterals are lined within a day once cleaning is done, and the line is out of service while the liner cures. We tell you the expected window in advance so you can plan around it. Multi-unit buildings and commercial properties take longer and are scheduled around occupancy.

Do I need a permit for trenchless sewer lining?

It depends on the scope of the work, and we confirm that before starting rather than after. Where a City plumbing permit and inspection apply, we pull it as part of the job. Final determination always sits with the City, not with us, and we will not tell you a permit is unnecessary to make a quote look cheaper.

Is the lateral my responsibility or the City's?

The City maintains the sewer main up to the property line. The lateral running from the property line into your house is the owner's responsibility, and it is typically excluded from standard home insurance policies. That is why a failing lateral becomes an out-of-pocket repair, and why the choice of repair method matters financially.
